There are currently two ways of installing radiant floor heating systems: electrical and hydronic. Installing electric radiant floor heating is cheaper and easier but requires a higher power bill.
Unlike electric floor heating, hydronic can use other fuel, oil, or gas. This concept has been put to practice since ancient times. American Indians would use the hydronic method to heat their homes due to the large amount of natural fuel in America at that time. The system requires fuel but just a little to heat up the water that circulates thru the pipes, and you do not have to upkeep it. The system uses a set of tubes under the tiles of your home; hot water is constantly circulating through these tubes and transferring the heat to your tiles. The boilers needed for such systems are usually not included in the package, if a boiler is included it is probably not very good. You will need to buy your own boiler. You could also connect your house water boiler to the device, but unless your boiler is really powerful it will not be able to supply enough heat for the system to work properly. It is recommended to buy a new boiler specifically designed for the hydronic floor heating system.
The disadvantages about such a system are the fact that you will need to buy a combi boiler. Buying a boiler can be quite expensive, especially if it is high quality. The inconveniences of tearing the floor apart and installing new floors need to be considered. The usual price Is about 5$ for every square foot of hydronic heating. Nevertheless, installing hydronic radiant floor heating will provide you with all the heat you need to live comfortably and will last for a long time without upkeep.
Of course, since such a heating system is usually harder to install, electric radiant floor heating systems are more popular. The two systems have been compared to each other since they were invented, but both systems are just about as convenient and cheap as the other. Just remember, installing radiant floor heating is highly recommended for people living in cold climates, especially those who suffer from allergies.
