If you want to protect your garage floor from damage and wear and tear then I want to share with you my experiences with epoxy garage floor coating. I had a floor that was stained and chipped. The chips made it almost impossible to work with a floor creeper because every time I wanted to slide a little one way or another the wheels would get caught in the holes and I couldn’t move. I researched garage floor coatings and found that epoxy based products are considered the top of the line.
Before applying the epoxy garage floor coating the most important action you can take is to clean the floor thoroughly. Start with a good quality degreaser to get all the oil and other substances that have stained the floor out of the concrete. You may need to scrub it if the stain has been there a long time. Next, wash the floor with soap and water. After you rinse the soap solution off check to see if there are any water beads present. The water should not bead up because if it does that indicates you still have petroleum products present in the concrete. You will have to keep degreasing until the water no longer beads.
Next, wash the floor surface with a 10% muriatic acid mixture. This finishes the cleaning and also neutralizes the acid in the concrete so the epoxy will bond better. Also at this time turn on a space heater if the temp is below 60 degrees F as this will help in the curing process.
Once the resin and hardener are mixed together it is imperative that you spread it quickly. The mixture will start to cure after about 10 minutes so mix small portions at a time and spread them out before mixing another. You can usually walk on the floor within 24 hours and it cures completely at about three days. You then have a nice, smooth finish that will protect the floor for years to come.
